What are GRP Scaffold Towers?

GRP Scaffold Towers 9 Nov 2022

What kind of environment are they essential for?

Fiberglass scaffold towers are essential in any environment where exposure to chemicals, corrosive materials and electrical hazards are present. These are known as Zone 1. This makes them ideal for a number of jobs such as uses in petro-chemical environments, food & pharmaceutical, and power and sub-stations.

What is Fibreglass?

Fibreglass is fibre-reinforced plastic made from glass fibre. It’s also known as glass-reinforced plastic, hence the GRP acronym. Fibreglass is lightweight, impressively strong, and flexible making it ideal for construction applications, it is used in everything from bathtubs to aircraft.

What makes fibreglass so useful for our application though is its intrinsic properties, such as:

  • Non-conductive – Due to its construction consisting of glass and plastic, it is naturally a fantastic electrical insulator.
  • Non-combustible – Thanks to its construction from mineral materials it is naturally non-combustible. This means flames can not be spread or sustained by it and it does not burn, smoke, or emit toxic fumes when heated.
  • Chemical resistance – Due to the glass they are constructed from, they have a good resistance to chemicals.

What is a Zone 1 area?

As classified by HSE, a zone 1 area is an area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation. It is worth noting that the zone definitions take no account of the consequences of a release. A site inspector should be able to tell you what areas of a site are classified as zone 1 and if your tower will meet the standard.
